Corruption in Burkina Faso: Prison sentences for four magistrates and three customs officials

Corruption au Burkina Faso : Verdict de prison pour quatre magistrats et trois douaniers

The Koupéla High Court delivered its verdict this Tuesday, February 24, concluding a landmark trial that began on January 16. The case, which involves corruption, money laundering, and bribery, led to the conviction of several high-ranking officials in the justice and customs services.

The sentences handed down

The court found several defendants guilty of selling court decisions, including dismissals of charges, to prosecuted customs officers.

  1. Alban Balanoë Somé: The heaviest sentence with 36 months in prison (18 of which are to be served) for corruption of a public official and revealing the identity of a protected witness.
  2. Magistrates (Mr. Traoré, U. Medah, SA Kaboré): Sentences ranging from 2 to 12 months of imprisonment for corruption and complicity.
  3. Customs officers (O. Yameogo, J. Yameogo, Z. Nikiéma): Sentenced to 15 months in prison (2 of which are to be served) .
  4. Fines: All sentences are accompanied by fines ranging from 2 to 3 million CFA francs .

Relaxations and controversies

While some were heavily sanctioned, three other defendants — magistrate Jean Jacques Wend-Panga Ouedraogo , lawyer Arno Sampebré and customs officer Seydou Traoré — were acquitted .

The trial was also marked by shocking statements from the convicted judges. They denounced heavy-handed investigative methods, citing the following facts:

  1. Removal;
  2. Of sequestration;
  3. Of torture.

Their lawyers denounced serious procedural irregularities and a flagrant disregard for the rights of the defense during the investigation.
