Tentative de coup d’État en Guinée-Bissau : Le Président Embaló annonce son arrestation, des tirs entendus

The political situation in Guinea-Bissau descended into violence on Wednesday, following last Sunday's presidential election. AFP journalists reported hearing heavy gunfire near the presidential palace, a sign of military unrest.

A few hours after these incidents, the outgoing president, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, claimed to have been the victim of a coup. He told Jeune Afrique that he was arrested around noon while in his office at the presidential palace.

This military action comes after the publication of the first partial results of the presidential election. President Embaló claimed victory with 65% of the vote, according to his own count.

According to the outgoing president's statements to Jeune Afrique, the coup was allegedly led by the army chief of staff.

Umaro Sissoco Embaló stated that his arrest was carried out without violence against him. However, he was arrested simultaneously with several high-ranking figures: the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, the Minister of the Interior, and the Deputy Chief of Staff.

These events confirm a period of great political and military instability in Guinea-Bissau, raising serious questions about the outcome of the general elections of November 23.
