Abdou succeeds Brama Traoré , who was dismissed after Burkina Faso's elimination in the round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, against Ivory Coast (3-0). The Federation announced that it chose Abdou for his solid experience in African football, his ability to structure teams, and his tactical expertise acquired over a long continental career.

Amir Abdou first made a name for himself on the African stage by leading the Comoros national team to their first-ever qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2021 , reaching the round of 16. He then managed Mauritania , guiding them to a memorable campaign that notably eliminated Algeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Before arriving in Burkina Faso, he managed Hassania Agadir in the Moroccan first division.
