The Senufo community of the Autonomous District of Abidjan has taken a historic step in consolidating its traditions. This Sunday, May 31, 2026, the commune of Abobo resonated with the rhythm of a solemn ceremony to present symbols of power and ceremonial attire to 75 traditional chiefs , who came from the 13 communes of the economic capital.

The event, which brought together a host of administrative, political and customary authorities, aimed at two major objectives: to strengthen the local authority of chiefs and to promote the rich Senufo cultural heritage .

A cultural bridge between Korhogo and Abidjan

The most captivating moment of the day was the symbolic enthronement of the 13 central communal chiefs. This rite was orchestrated by the representative of His Majesty Issa Coulibaly, canton chief of Korhogo. A powerful gesture that reaffirms the unbreakable bond between the northern roots of the country and the Senufo diaspora in Abidjan.

For Soro Balafon Seydou, president of the organizing committee, the event is foundational:

"This ceremony is a historic moment for our community. It reflects our shared desire to preserve, promote, and pass on to future generations the rich cultural and traditional values that form the basis of the Senufo people's identity."

Tradition and modern governance: a winning combination

Placed under the sponsorship of Fidèle Gboroton Sarassoro (Minister and Chief of Staff to the President of the Republic) and under the patronage of Kandia Camara (President of the Senate and Mayor of Abobo), the ceremony highlighted the crucial role of chiefs as local intermediaries between the administration and the people.

In her speech, the President of the Senate praised the vision of the Ivorian government and paid a vibrant tribute to His Majesty Souleymane Ouattara, central chief of the Senufo community (MIDJO) of Abidjan, as well as to the new recipients.

The three key missions of the leaders were reaffirmed during the event:

  1. Transmission: Perpetuating ancestral identity and values among younger generations.
  2. Mediation: Ensuring the management and peaceful resolution of community conflicts.
  3. Cohesion: Acting as true pillars of social peace on a daily basis.

A national dynamic

Representing the sponsor, Abou Nibi (2nd Vice-President of the Poro Regional Council) noted that this initiative is part of a broader movement. It directly echoes the large gathering held on August 25, 2024, in Korhogo, where more than 1,200 Poro chiefs also received their official insignia, confirming the State's commitment to enhancing the status of traditional chieftaincy in Côte d'Ivoire.
