Afrique du Sud : Indignation Nationale après une Vidéo de Harcèlement au Lycée de Milnerton
Shocking video footage of school bullying has quickly gone viral, sparking nationwide outrage. The footage shows a 16-year-old boy being violently assaulted and humiliated by a group of students at Cape Town's Milnerton High School. The incident also sparked widespread criticism of the school's handling of bullying reports.
On Thursday morning, several teenagers involved in the harassment at Milnerton High School appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court.
According to Eric Ntabazalilia, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the youths are being prosecuted for assault causing grievous bodily harm. He stated that the state would not oppose their release on bail. The hearing was scheduled to resume at 2 p.m.
Police confirmed that the suspects, aged between 17 and 18, were charged following the video's release and later released on bail set at 2,000 South African rand (approximately $115).
The attack allegedly took place on October 16, shortly after classes ended, either inside or near the school.
Tensions escalated the day before when a parent protest took place outside the high school. Parents accused the school of negligence, claiming that it had failed to ensure student safety and had ignored previous complaints of harassment. Parents testified that their children had also been victims of violence that was filmed and broadcast, without any significant action being taken by school authorities.
