Alerte Sanitaire : Le Mpox se propage de Madagascar vers les Comores et La Réunion

The mox (monkeypox) epidemic, officially declared in Madagascar on December 30th, has now crossed the borders of the Big Island. The disease is spreading to neighboring archipelagos, prompting a large-scale international and regional response.

1. Current situation in Madagascar: the epicenter

Having started in the city of Majunga (west coast), the virus has now spread throughout the entire territory of Madagascar.

  1. Current figures: 133 confirmed cases and 273 suspected cases.
  2. International support: The United States has released $450,000 in aid, while France is mobilizing the Red Cross to support the local health response.

2. Regional spread: Reunion and Mayotte affected

The virus travels with passengers. Several imported cases have been reported in French territories in the Indian Ocean:

  1. Reunion Island: A first case was confirmed on Friday, January 23rd in a traveler returning from Madagascar. The patient is in isolation.
  2. Mayotte: The island had already reported a first imported case at the beginning of January.

3. Red alert in the Comoros

The Comoros archipelago has officially activated its response phase after the detection of four cases this Friday, January 23 in Moroni.

  1. Patient profile: Comorian nationals aged 16 to 39, who arrived by boat from Madagascar.
  2. Health status: Three patients are recovering, the fourth remains under observation.
  3. Diagnostic capacity: Thanks to reagents provided by South Korea, authorities can now confirm cases directly on site.

4. Response strategy and vaccination

Faced with the emergency, regional health authorities (ARS, ministries) are focusing on three pillars:

  1. Surveillance: Increased controls in ports and airports.
  2. Prevention: Call for vigilance regarding "skin-to-skin" contact and contaminated objects.
  3. Vaccination: In the Comoros, an order for vaccines is underway. Priority will be given to healthcare workers, border agents, and immunocompromised individuals.
Reminder from the authorities: In case of suspicious symptoms, it is imperative to isolate yourself and consult a health facility immediately.
