Bénin : Romuald Wadagni lance sa course vers la Marina
Just three weeks before the first round of the presidential election scheduled for April 12 , Economy Minister and presidential candidate Romuald Wadagni reached a key milestone. On Saturday, March 21, before a huge crowd gathered at the Cotonou Convention Center, Patrice Talon's designated successor unveiled the main points of his platform.
It was in an electric atmosphere and a relaxed style—blue jacket, no tie or lectern—that the 49-year-old candidate presented himself to the voters. Facing thousands of supporters from across the country, he outlined a vision centered on economic decentralization .
His plan involves dividing Benin into six strategic regional hubs . The objective? To specialize each territory in key sectors such as:
Aware that more than half of Beninese people are under 30, Romuald Wadagni has placed youth and digital technology at the top of his priorities.
"We will build an ecosystem that allows every young person, regardless of their location, to train and develop their digital skills," he promised, displaying the ambition to transform Benin into an exporter of technological solutions .
This approach seems to appeal, both to elected officials of the majority and to curious citizens, who see in this "structured continuity" a guarantee of stability for the country's growth (which crossed the 7% mark last year).
The April 12th election is shaping up to be a two-way race: Romuald Wadagni will face Paul Hounkpè (FCBE), representing a moderate opposition. The "Les Démocrates" party, meanwhile, remains sidelined due to a lack of sufficient endorsements.
Beyond the economy, the candidate will have to navigate a complex regional climate. Between the persistent jihadist threat in the North and the political turmoil in West Africa, Wadagni advocates for strengthened regional cooperation , particularly with immediate neighbors.
Despite a foiled coup attempt last December, the ruling coalition is approaching this election from a position of strength, bolstered by its recent successes in the legislative and municipal elections.
