Burkina Faso : Nuit de tensions et de flou autour de la présidence
A series of explosions shook the area around the presidential palace in Ouagadougou on the night of Saturday, February 28th to Sunday, March 1st. While the specter of a coup briefly hung over the capital, the situation appears to reflect more internal friction within the security apparatus.
Shortly after midnight, gunshots triggered alarm among the "Waiyans," supporters of Captain Ibrahim Traoré. Initially believing it to be an attempt at destabilization, they quickly mobilized their networks before tempering their statements in a video later posted on social media.
According to a security source contacted by RFI, the incident appears to have been a direct accident:
Behind the official version of the accident, the silence of the presidency fuels questions. Several sources mention growing tensions between the military hierarchy and the troops on the ground.
The point of contention: The management of the security crisis. Officers and heads of units reportedly recently declined a summons to Ouagadougou, signaling a sign of discontent.
This nervousness is occurring within a context of deteriorating security:
Despite the nighttime unrest, life has returned to normal in Ouagadougou. No exceptional military presence has been deployed in the streets, and residents say they are going about their usual business without hindrance.
