Cameroun/Nécrologie : La ville d’Edéa pleure son maire, Jean Mbei Nje

The "city of light" awoke to gloom on Thursday, February 19, 2026. Jean Mbei Nje , mayor of the Edéa II district municipality, passed away at the Mouna clinic in Douala following an illness, leaving behind a major political and economic legacy.

A builder in the service of Edéa II

A central figure in the municipal executive for nearly two decades, Jean Mbei Nje has dedicated a large part of his life to local development. His rise to power was a gradual process:

  1. 2007: Joined the town hall as deputy mayor.
  2. 2013: Election to the position of mayor.
  3. 2020: Re-election confirming the confidence of his constituents.

During his tenure, the municipality underwent significant transformations, including the expansion of the road network, improved access to drinking water and electricity, and the strengthening of the local school map.

A pillar of the CPDM and the community

Originally from Ekité and a respected notable of the Ekité 2 traditional chieftaincy, Jean Mbei Nje was a heavyweight in the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM) . President of the CPDM section of Edéa 2 since 2015, he successfully revitalized the grassroots movement and consolidated the influence of the ruling party in the Sanaga-Maritime region.

A top-flight financial expert

Beyond the tricolor sash, the 64-year-old was a key player in the Cameroonian economic landscape. A former student of ESSEC in Douala, he completed his studies abroad before putting his accounting expertise at the service of the country.

For the past 15 years, he held the position of Administrative and Financial Director of the ABN group , actively contributing to the success of iconic brands such as:

  1. Supermont and Opur (mineral waters)
  2. Planet and Lana
  3. ABN Motors

A final, unanimous tribute

The announcement of his passing sparked widespread emotion. François Biba , the MP for Sanaga-Maritime, expressed his "deep sadness" and offered his condolences to the family of the deceased and to his political colleagues, paying tribute to the memory of a man devoted to the well-being of his fellow citizens.
