Congo-Brazzaville : Fin de campagne sous le signe du « Coup K.O. »

This Friday, March 13, marks the final stage of the presidential campaign in Congo-Brazzaville. Two days before the election scheduled for Sunday, March 15, the incumbent president, Denis Sassou-Nguesso , concluded his national tour with a show of force in the capital.

The steamroller of the majority

On Boulevard Alfred Raoul, the atmosphere was that of a major event. Between massive security deployments and meticulously planned logistics, the presidential camp spared no expense:

  1. Massive mobilization: Thousands of supporters, transported by bus, sported new outfits and accessories.
  2. Cult of personality: The candidate was celebrated under various evocative titles: the Elephant, the Baobab, the Helmsman or even "Papa Bonheur".
  3. The speech: Without notes, Denis Sassou-Nguesso hammered home his program, promising the creation of thousands of jobs, the fight against corruption and the attraction of foreign investors to exploit mineral resources.
The major challenge: For the incumbent president (82 years old, 41 of which have been spent in power), the goal is a clear victory in the first round. His biggest fear? Voter abstention , which he is combating by presenting himself as the sole "guarantor of peace" in the face of an opposition that, according to him, represents uncertainty.

An opposition operating in the shadows and amidst traffic jams

The contrast is striking with the opposition candidates, who struggle to exist in the face of this electoral war machine.

  1. Vivien Manangou: The academic gathered a few hundred followers on Matsoua Avenue, denouncing once again the blatant imbalance of resources committed.
  2. Joseph Kignoumbi Kia Mboungou: Illustrating the logistical difficulties of the opposition, he ended his day stuck in traffic in Brazzaville, trying as best he could to reach his last meeting place.

According to the current Constitution, this election could pave the way for Denis Sassou-Nguesso's final five-year term.
