Congo : décès du ministre d’État Firmin Ayessa à 74 ans en Turquie
The Republic of Congo is in mourning. The Minister of State in charge of the Civil Service, Labour and Social Security, Firmin Ayessa, died this Tuesday, February 17, 2026 in Istanbul, Turkey, at the age of 74, where he was receiving medical treatment.
A major figure in the state apparatus, Firmin Ayessa was considered one of President Denis Sassou-Nguesso's closest collaborators. His career, marked by several decades at the top of public life, made him one of the most influential figures on the Congolese political scene.
Trained as a journalist, he began his career in public media before joining the senior civil service. Chief of staff to the head of state for nearly ten years, he then served as deputy prime minister between 2017 and 2021, before being appointed Minister of State in charge of the Civil Service.
Member of Parliament for Makoua since 2002, Firmin Ayessa has been a key player in the implementation of public policies and in presidential communication, making a lasting contribution to the functioning of Congolese institutions.
Upon the announcement of his passing, tributes poured in from the political class and the administration, honoring the memory of a "great public servant" and a man of loyalty.
His death leaves a void at the top of the Congolese executive branch and marks the end of a long career in service to the State.
