Diplomatie : Le Cameroun suspendu de l'Union africaine pour arriérés de contributions
Cameroon is facing an unprecedented disciplinary measure within the pan-African organization. Following the non-payment of its statutory contributions, estimated at nearly two billion CFA francs , the country has been officially suspended from its rights to participate in the decision-making mechanisms of the African Union (AU).
This suspension, which takes effect immediately, neutralizes Yaoundé's essential diplomatic levers on the continental stage. Until the outstanding contributions are fully settled, Cameroon is deprived of the following prerogatives:
This AU sanction represents the concrete manifestation of recently raised national budgetary concerns. Finance Minister Louis Paul Motazé had previously warned of cash flow problems that could force Cameroon to reduce its participation, or even withdraw, from several international organizations by 2026.
The African Union's decision thus constitutes the first tangible indicator of this scenario of financial fragility affecting the country's diplomatic commitments.
For a nation that aspires to play a leading role within CEMAC and to remain a central player in stability in Central Africa, this exclusion raises fundamental questions about the prioritization of public spending and the management of multilateral commitments.
The suspension now places the Cameroonian government under an immediate obligation: to regularize its financial situation with the AU without delay in order to end this diplomatic isolation and restore its credibility on the international stage.
