Mauritania is in mourning. Boubacar Ould Messaoud , an emblematic figure in the fight for human rights and founder of the SOS Slaves organization, passed away on Thursday, March 12, at the age of 80.
Originally from Rosso, this architect by training dedicated his life to breaking the chains of slavery and denouncing systemic discrimination. In 1995 , he founded SOS Slaves, an organization that operated clandestinely for many years before being officially recognized by the state in 2005.

For MP and activist Biram Dah Abeid, the loss is immeasurable. He describes the deceased as the "conscience of the oppressed," recalling that his struggle went beyond the issue of slavery alone to encompass the fight against racism and for the advent of a true democracy.
“His image, his trajectory and his positions have marked entire generations. His departure comes at a time when Mauritanians needed his wisdom the most,” said Biram Dah Abeid.
