Drame à la frontière : deux éleveurs mauritaniens tués en territoire malien
On Friday, March 20, two Mauritanian herders and a Malian man lost their lives near the border between the two countries. While the circumstances of this tragedy officially remain unclear, the event occurs within an already strained diplomatic climate between Nouakchott and Bamako.
According to the Mauritanian army's statement, the three civilians were arrested in the village of Yakna (Yélimané district, Kayes region), about 12 kilometers from the Mauritanian border.
Faced with rumors of a Malian incursion onto Mauritanian soil, the Nouakchott army sought to clarify the situation. It denied any violation of its territory, reaffirming that its units rigorously control every inch of the border.
This communication appears to have a specific objective: to avoid escalation . After a week of heightened tensions marked by Malian accusations of supporting terrorism—firmly denied by Mauritania—Nouakchott is now prioritizing diplomatic discretion to protect its interests without breaking off dialogue with Bamako.
On the Malian side, authorities have not directly commented on the deaths of these herders. However, the Malian army confirmed that it conducted a large-scale operation in the Yélimané area between March 14 and 21.
| Official report on the Malian operation | Observations |
| Enemies killed | About forty |
| Infrastructure | Terrorist hideouts destroyed |
| Hostages freed | 12 people |
| Case of livestock farmers | No mention of Mauritanian civilian casualties |
This latest incident is testing the willingness to cooperate recently displayed by the two neighbors. By refusing to explicitly accuse Malian forces despite local testimonies, the Mauritanian general staff is attempting to leave the door open for "clarification of the facts" rather than confrontation.
