Drame au Tour du Rwanda : deux morts lors de la première étape
The start of the Tour of Rwanda, which took place on Sunday, February 22, was marred by a tragic road accident. As the riders set off on the longest stage of the competition (173 km between Rukomo and Rwamagana), a vehicle from the publicity caravan ran off the road and was fatal.
The accident occurred near Gabiro , in the east of the country, about 70 kilometers from the finish line. In heavy rain, one of the sponsor vehicles lost control, crashing into a group of fans gathered at the side of the road.
The toll is heavy:
"This is a very sad moment," said Nelly Mukazayire, Rwanda's Minister of Sports, while also emphasizing the crucial importance of vigilance and road safety at such popular events.
From a sporting perspective, the stage was marked by 2,100 meters of elevation gain and difficult weather conditions. Israeli Itamar Einhorn (NSN Development) won the sprint in Rwamagana, becoming the first leader of this edition.
While the country remains on the momentum of the successful organization of the Cycling World Championships last September, the national police immediately opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of this collision.
