Élections à la FMA : L’athlétisme malgache à la poursuite de sa gloire perdue
Once the pride of Malagasy sport, athletics has been going through a turbulent period for two decades. Between stagnant records and media invisibility, the discipline seems to have lost the momentum that, from Jean-Louis Ravelomanantsoa to the champions of the 2000s, made Madagascar a continental powerhouse.
With the election for the presidency of the Malagasy Athletics Federation (FMA) scheduled for February, the focus is on assessment and addressing urgent issues. Three candidates are already in the running:
For observers, the decline is primarily a question of priorities. Independence "Depa Sakaraha" Lahimana points to the lack of interest from investors:
"Donors are turning to football or basketball. Athletics has become the poor relation of national sport, receiving only crumbs when it comes to financial support."
Beyond the money, it's the talent identification system that's in ruins. The breakdown of the link between school sports and elite levels has dried up the pool of talent. Without regional training clubs and with athletes training primarily on clay courts, the gap with international standards (synthetic courts, modern equipment) continues to widen.
Joseph-Berlioz Randriamihaja , the former African 110m hurdles champion, doesn't mince words when it comes to the current management. He denounces the sidelining of technical experts and a lack of overall vision.
The next term will be the last chance to revitalize the sport. Expectations of the candidates are clear and ambitious:
The stakes of this election go beyond simple governance; it is about deciding whether Madagascar can, once again, hope to shine on the African and world podiums.
