Guinée : Le Forum des jeunes des partis politiques écarte la candidature de Mamadi Doumbouya

The National Youth Forum of Political Parties of Guinea (FONAJEP) held a press conference this Monday, October 27, 2025, to address several crucial points in view of the presidential election of December 28, 2025. Among the topics discussed were the possible candidacy of General Mamadi Doumbouya, the electoral deposit, the inconsistencies between the new Constitution and the Electoral Code, as well as the establishment of a medical college for the examination of candidacies by the Supreme Court.

Although the new Constitution, adopted in September 2025, allows the transitional president, General Mamadi Doumbouya, to run for office, and despite the numerous expressions of support already voiced, the president of FONAJEP, Lamine Kamano, expressed confidence. He affirmed his conviction that, for the time being, neither General Doumbouya, nor members of the government, nor those of the National Transitional Council (CNT) will be candidates.

“Given the current circumstances, we, as young politicians, are compelled to speak out on this issue,” declared Lamine Kamano. He recalled that the president, as a high-ranking army officer, assumed power on September 5, 2021, without the support of political parties or civil society organizations, nor of the “demagogues who are now forming support groups to demand his candidacy.” He concluded that “It will therefore be up to the people of Guinea to decide whether or not to renew their confidence in him. The forum is calm and confident that, as of today, neither General Mamadi Doumbouya, nor members of the government, nor those of the National Transitional Council will be candidates in these elections.”

Regardless of its candidacy, FONAJEP has committed to closely monitoring the entire electoral process. The Forum is currently planning to train observers who will be deployed to all polling stations across the country. Lamine Kamano has invited political parties and independent candidates to join FONAJEP in this "credible, transparent, and unbiased" observation effort.

Regarding the electoral deposit, set at 900 million Guinean francs, the Forum advocated for a reduction, deeming this amount excessive and out of step with the Guinean standard of living. "The choice of a candidate should not be based solely on their financial means," it insisted, emphasizing that there are good candidates who do not have sufficient resources. FONAJEP asked the General Directorate of Elections (DGE) to "drastically reduce this amount" and called on political parties to unite in support of this cause.

While commending the National Transitional Council's (CNT) work to standardize electoral laws into a single code, FONAJEP (National Forum for Youth and Popular Education) regretted that the current electoral law "excludes Guinean youth from the presidential election." Deeming this a "contempt for young people," the Forum announced that it would ask the future president-elect, the day after December 28, 2025, to revise this law to incorporate the aspirations of youth. Furthermore, it called on support movements and socio-professional organizations to exercise "restraint and respect the legal provisions relating to the electoral campaign."

Founded in 2013, FONAJEP is a political organization composed and led by young members of political parties. Its main objectives are to bring together young people of all persuasions, promote social and political cohesion, the rule of law, good governance, and youth participation in decision-making bodies. The Forum also works against all forms of violence and discrimination.
