Hommage à Yacouba Yira : Le basketball africain perd l'un de ses plus illustres bâtisseurs
The continental basketball community is in mourning. On March 15, 2026 , Yacouba Yira , former FIBA Africa Administrative Director and a leading figure in sports development in Africa, passed away.
To honor his memory, a seventh-day memorial service will be held this Sunday, March 22, 2026, at his home in Koumassi Remblais, Abidjan. This moment of reflection will allow his family, loved ones, and former colleagues to pay their final respects to a man whose life was entirely devoted to the legal profession and to excellence.
Affectionately nicknamed "Mr. Yira," this Physical Education and Sports (PE) teacher by training left his mark on the institution through his rigor and loyalty. Alongside Secretary General Alphonse Bilé, he was one of the architects of the modernization of African basketball, working tirelessly to structure national federations and ensure the success of competitions across the continent.
Beyond offices and gyms, Yacouba Yira was known for his kind heart:
His departure leaves a huge void, but his influence will endure through the structures he helped build and the generations he inspired.
