The murder of 18-month-old Landricia has plunged the Toliara region into terror and outrage. This barbaric act, described as a "ritual crime" by the authorities, has brutally reignited the national debate on mystical beliefs and violence targeting people with albinism in Madagascar.

Timeline of a family tragedy and a manhunt

The horror began a week earlier in the fokontany of Ankalika, where the little girl was snatched from her parents in the middle of the night.

1. The kidnapping: During the abduction, Landricia's father tried to intervene. Seriously injured by the assailants, he remains in critical condition at the hospital in Toliara.
2. The sequestration: According to the first elements of the investigation, the child was taken to Antsihanaka (Betsinjaka commune), four kilometers from her home, to be sequestered in a house under construction.
3. The macabre discovery: On Friday morning, the lifeless and decapitated body of the little girl was found wrapped in cloth in the courtyard of a renowned shaman in Antsihanaka.
4. The head was found: The following day, the victim's head was discovered in the Ambohitsabo neighborhood, at the home of a doctor. The doctor's detention had not yet been officially confirmed by law enforcement at the time of the incident.

"I was called early in the morning to see the body. Law enforcement and regional authorities were already on site," testifies Benaria, president of the fokontany of Antsihanaka.

The profile of the suspects and the state of the investigation

At this stage, the investigation is progressing rapidly. Eight people have already been arrested , including:

1. Two shamans (traditional healers);
2. An academic;
3. Two main suspects, who were brought before the prosecutor of the Toliara court of first instance, reportedly admitted to the facts.

Investigators are also closely examining a gem dealer suspected of involvement. According to local sources, the perpetrators planned to return and further mutilate the body, as the ritual requires the removal of more organs.

The weight of mystical beliefs in question

This tragedy highlights the persistence of archaic superstitions in certain rural areas. Local beliefs attribute magical properties to the bodies of albino people (particularly their eyes and certain organs), which are believed to bring fortune, power, or prosperity.

“Sacrifices of newborns by shamans are sometimes mentioned here, but targeting an albino child is rarer. This time, the little girl was probably targeted because of these false beliefs,” laments the fokontany president. This observation is shared by the elders of the commune, who point out that these rituals are cruelly aimed at “maintaining power or attracting wealth.”

A call for exemplary justice and education

Faced with widespread outrage, Colonel Randrianirina, president of the Refoundation of the Republic of Madagascar, spoke on Saturday to demand absolute firmness:

1. A prison transfer: He is requesting that the guilty parties be incarcerated in the high-security prison of Tsiafahy, and not in Toliara.
2. Transparency: It demands that the identity of all sponsors be revealed to the general public.
3. The end of obscurantism: "It is time to educate the population and to stop living with false beliefs, such as sacrificing children to obtain material wealth," he insisted.
