Inondations tragiques à Safi : 14 morts et dégâts considérables au Maroc
A tragic toll. Fourteen people lost their lives this Sunday, December 14, 2025, in Safi, a Moroccan port city on the Atlantic coast, following exceptionally violent flash floods . This is the latest toll released by local authorities.
The province of Safi, located approximately 300 kilometers south of Rabat, was struck by "very heavy thunderstorms." These torrential rains caused "exceptional flash floods" concentrated within "one hour," according to an official statement.
Thirty-two people were also injured and taken to the city hospital. Most of them were able to return home after receiving the necessary treatment.
The material damage is significant:
Images circulating on social media attest to the violence of the phenomenon: a torrent of muddy water rushes down the streets, carrying cars and debris. Other photos show a partially submerged mausoleum and Civil Protection boats mobilized to rescue residents.
Operations are actively continuing to search for any missing persons and secure the affected areas . Authorities are also working to provide the necessary support and assistance to the populations impacted by this exceptional situation.
These events come after the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) issued warnings on Saturday about heavy, sometimes thundery, rain and snowfall above 1,700 meters in several provinces of the kingdom over the weekend. On Sunday evening, the DGM again warned of heavy, locally thundery rainfall (40-60 mm) expected across the country on Tuesday.
