Lagos : Incendie à l'aéroport Murtala Muhammed, le trafic aérien paralysé

A fire broke out late Monday afternoon, February 23, 2026, at Lagos International Airport in Nigeria. Six people were injured , and all flights were suspended.

Origin of the disaster and human toll

According to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the fire is believed to have started in the server room on the first floor of Terminal 1.

Injuries: Six people (three men and three women) were treated. Their condition is considered stable, although one victim requires further examination.
Spectacular rescue: Fourteen people trapped in the control tower were safely evacuated thanks to the intervention of a crane.

Impact on air traffic

As a safety precaution, the airspace was immediately closed, causing significant disruptions:

Diverted flights: An Air France flight from Paris notably had to turn back in mid-air.
Temporary control tower: NAMA (Airspace Management Agency) is working to set up a temporary structure in order to restart traffic as quickly as possible.

A terminal undergoing extensive renovation

Ironically, the area affected by the fires was undergoing a major modernization program. This renovation project represents a colossal investment of 712 billion naira (approximately $530 million).

Although the fire is now under control, rescue teams remain mobilized to fully secure the site and prevent any flare-ups.
