Législatives au Bénin : Entre espoir d’emploi et désillusion, la jeunesse de Parakou face aux urnes
As the double legislative and local elections approach this Sunday, the electoral excitement struggles to mask a pervasive social reality on the campus of the University of Parakou. While party headquarters (3 for the local elections, 5 for the legislative elections) are making numerous public appearances, the students have their minds elsewhere: on their professional integration.
Work, the top priority. “Work!” That’s the heartfelt cry of a student asked about their expectations. For many, the ballot box must first and foremost serve as a lever to create jobs and value the potential of young graduates. David Djigbe, president of the university’s student union, emphasizes the importance of this seven-year term: “It is crucial to choose those who will legislate for us. Our future is at stake in the decision-making bodies.”
A marked disinterest . Yet, this fervor is not unanimous. Between a lack of awareness of the electoral calendar and political weariness, some make no secret of their indifference. "Politicians do what they want," confides a management student. For others, confusion reigns in the face of the current political landscape, raising fears of high abstention. In this context, voter turnout will be the true barometer of Sunday's election.
