🇲🇬 Madagascar : le colonel Randrianirina investi président après un coup d’État militaire
Antananarivo, October 17, 2025 – Colonel Michael Randrianirina has been officially sworn in as Madagascar's "president of the refoundation ," following a lightning takeover by the army, supported by a broad popular protest movement.
The abrupt transition followed massive protests led by young people, particularly against poverty, power cuts, and corruption. The military, particularly the elite CAPSAT unit , refused to suppress the protests and forced President Andry Rajoelina from power.
The inauguration ceremony took place in front of the High Constitutional Court . Colonel Randrianirina promised an institutional overhaul , the drafting of a new constitution and elections within 18 to 24 months .
A former regional governor and influential officer, he was briefly imprisoned in 2023 for an attempted mutiny, before becoming a popular figure by calling on the army to join the people.
The African Union has suspended Madagascar, denouncing an unconstitutional change of power.
The UN , France and the United States call for a rapid return to a civilian democratic order.
On the ground, opinion is divided between hope for renewal and fear of prolonged military power.
Colonel Randrianirina is now staking his legitimacy on his ability to keep his commitments and restore confidence in the Malagasy state.
