Mali : Les cours reprennent après la crise du carburant

Mali's Ministry of National Education has announced the resumption of classes for Monday, November 10, 2025 , marking the end of the suspension decreed at the end of October due to a nationwide fuel shortage .

Classes suspended due to the jihadist blockade

At the end of October, the government decided to suspend school and university activities for two weeks, starting October 27. This emergency measure was a direct consequence of fuel supply difficulties , themselves caused by a blockade organized by jihadist groups .

The government had then prioritized access to fuel for essential services, such as "emergency, assistance and public transportation vehicles" .

Return to normal in Education

The blockade is the work of the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) , an Al-Qaeda affiliate, which carries out targeted attacks against fuel tanker trucks. These attacks have particularly targeted convoys transiting through Senegal and Ivory Coast, major routes for Malian imports.

The Malian government has managed to contain the crisis, allowing a return to normal in the education sector.

  1. In his statement, the Minister of National Education formally reiterated the date for the resumption of classes throughout the entire territory.
  2. He also wanted to thank the entire educational community (students, parents, teachers, administrative staff) for their understanding and cooperation during this period of disruption.

Persistent security risks

Despite this improvement in education, the security situation in Mali remains worrying, which has led to international warnings:

  1. United States: The U.S. State Department has authorized the departure of its non-essential personnel and raised its travel advisory for Mali to level 4 (the highest) . They recommend reconsidering all travel due to the security risk, which is deemed "very high."
  2. Netherlands: The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has placed the entire territory of Mali in the red zone , emphasizing a "precarious and unpredictable" security situation. The website specifies that the risk of attacks and kidnappings is high and that past shortages could still lead to unrest or food shortages .

Mali faces the challenge of fully restoring stability and improving its international image, particularly by being removed from the list of countries advised against by major powers.
