Niger : massacre de 16 civils dans la région de Tillabéri
Western Niger is once again the scene of extreme violence. On Friday, March 27, a bloody attack carried out by armed individuals claimed the lives of 16 civilians in the department of Banibangou, a particularly unstable area located near the Malian border.
According to consistent accounts, the ambush occurred in a desert area as a convoy of five trucks, carrying passengers and goods, was making its way from Niamey to the weekly market in Tizigorou.
The modus operandi described by the survivors testifies to a cold and selective violence:
This massacre takes place in the "three borders area", a sanctuary for groups affiliated with the Islamic State in the Sahel (ISS) and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) .
The tragedy undermines the official narrative of the military regime. While General Abdourahamane Tiani recently asserted that the security situation was "stabilized" under the control of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS), the reality on the ground remains marked by persistent insecurity.
The regime's response: To compensate for the army's relative impotence in the face of these lightning raids, the junta announced on March 27 the creation of a corps of civilian auxiliaries to support regular troops in the fight against terrorism.
Context: The Tillabéri region has been experiencing recurring waves of jihadist violence since 2017, forcing many villages to organize themselves into precarious self-defense militias.
