Nigeria : La Chine dénonce l'ingérence américaine
China has expressed its support for Nigeria following recent statements by the US president suggesting possible military action in the country, under the pretext of the alleged persecution of Christians.
On Tuesday, Chinese diplomacy clearly outlined its position at a press conference. Mao Ning , spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated:
"As a comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in its efforts to lead its people along a development path suited to its national conditions.
China opposes any country that interferes in the internal affairs of other countries under the pretext of religion or human rights, and opposes the frequent use of sanctions and military threats.
These comments come after President Trump claimed that Christianity faced an "existential threat" in Nigeria, citing jihadist groups such as the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP) and Boko Haram.
However, organizations like Amnesty International qualify this interpretation, pointing out that the attacks in the northeast of the country are not solely motivated by religious reasons and that Muslims are also being targeted .
According to US government statistics, approximately 46% of the Nigerian population is Christian .
