Nigeria: Remaniement majeur à la tête de l'armée nigériane
The government of Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and plagued by violence from jihadist groups for years, carried out a major overhaul of its military hierarchy on Friday.
General Olufemi Oluyede has been appointed to succeed General Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff. Meanwhile, Major General W. Shaibu has been appointed the new Chief of Army Staff. Other changes have also been recorded at the head of the Navy and Air Force. Only the head of Defence Intelligence, General EAP Undiendeye, has retained his position.
This sweep, initiated by President Bola Tinubu, comes on the heels of a failed coup attempt that recently made national headlines. According to the Nigerian Defense Intelligence Agency, the coup, for which at least 16 officers were arrested, was originally planned to take place during the canceled October 1 parade.
