Ouagadougou : 180 000 œufs contaminés transformés en engrais
On Friday, February 28, 2026, a large-scale operation conducted jointly by customs services and the Directorate General of Veterinary Services averted a serious health risk in Burkina Faso. 180,000 eggs unfit for consumption were seized and converted into organic fertilizer.
The alert was raised following the interception of 600 cartons of imported eggs without any health documentation. The investigation revealed two major problems:
Under the leadership of Minister of State Ismaël Isombié, the authorities opted for an innovative approach. Instead of simply destroying the eggs, they were transported to a processing unit in Ouagadougou to be recycled into organic fertilizer , thus supporting local agricultural production.
Veterinary Captain Aboubacar Nacro pointed out that this operation represents a net loss of more than 12 million FCFA for the unscrupulous importer.
"This measure is vital, because it is a matter of public health," he stressed, while urging consumers to be vigilant against products resulting from fraud.
