Ouganda : L'opposition dénonce un massacre de civils en plein processus électoral
While provisional results of the presidential election place incumbent President Yoweri Museveni far ahead, the social and political climate is descending into violence. The camp of his main rival, Bobi Wine , accuses the army of having executed several supporters.
On the night of January 15-16, the home of Muwanga Kivumbi , a member of parliament for the National Unity Platform (NUP) in the Butambala district, was the scene of a bloody raid. According to the elected official, ten young activists were killed by the armed forces while they were peacefully gathered.
"They took the bodies away to erase the evidence. All that remains is a pool of blood," said a deeply shocked Muwanga Kivumbi.
His wife, Zahara Nampewo, stated that the victims were unarmed campaign workers. The attack reportedly occurred around 3:00 a.m., as civilians sought refuge from gunfire in nearby plantations.
President Museveni, 81, is seeking a seventh term after 40 years in power. To ensure his victory, the opposition denounces a total lockdown of the country.
Ugandan authorities present a different version of events. A security official claimed that seven people (not ten) were killed, justifying the use of force by an alleged attack on a local polling station.
Current trends according to the electoral commission: | Candidate | Provisional score | | :--- | :--- | | Yoweri Museveni | 76.25% | | Bobi Wine | 19.85% |
The final results, for both the presidential and legislative elections, are expected by the end of the day on January 17.
