Sahel : L'ONU appelle à la mutualisation des forces pour endiguer la vague terroriste
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has made a passionate appeal for unity among West African nations to intensify the fight against terrorism in the Sahel region.
It was during a meeting of the UN Security Council, held on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 and dedicated to consolidating peace in West Africa, that the head of the Organization urged the Sahel States to put aside their disagreements in the face of the alarming proliferation of jihadist attacks.
"It is absolutely essential that, despite these differences, we build a platform for cooperation between the intelligence and security services " of these countries, he said, stressing the urgency of a coordinated response.
Speaking on behalf of the member countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), Mali's ambassador to the UN, Issa Konfourou , reaffirmed the Alliance's willingness to cooperate, while setting strict conditions:
"We are fully prepared to cooperate with the States of the region and all partners who wish to do so, in strict respect for the sovereignty of our States, our strategic choices and the interests of our people," he said.
The ambassador also stressed the global nature of the fight, stating that "the fight against terrorism is and must remain a regional and international struggle , particularly in the context of the expanding terrorist threat in West Africa and elsewhere."
For several weeks, armed terrorist groups (ATGs) have strengthened their presence and actions, particularly in Mali and other states of the ESA.
In Mali, their operations are specifically aimed at disrupting the country's fuel supply . These actions have a direct and severe impact on the national economy and the already precarious daily lives of the Sahelian population.
