Sénégal/Tragédie à l’UCAD : Le gouvernement promet la lumière après le décès d’un étudiant
The campus of Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar is in mourning. Abdoulaye Ba , a second-year medical student, lost his life on Monday during violent clashes between students and law enforcement. The crisis, triggered by delays in the payment of university scholarships, has reached a critical point.
Tensions erupted as students protested for their scholarships. According to the official statement, Abdoulaye Ba was fatally wounded during the clashes. Describing the situation as "serious," the authorities expressed their condolences to the victim's family and the university community.
Faced with the outrage, the government is trying to calm things down by making several commitments:
"The government calls on all stakeholders to exercise restraint, a sense of responsibility, and calm the situation." — Excerpt from the government statement.
To address the urgency of the situation, an interministerial press conference will be held this Tuesday, February 10th, at 4:30 PM at the Prime Minister's Office . The Ministers of Justice, the Armed Forces, the Interior, and Higher Education will speak to provide updates on the progress of the case.
This tragedy is part of a climate of persistent social tension in Senegal, where the issue of scholarship payments remains a major point of friction between student youth and the State.
