In response to the escalating hostilities in the Middle East, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf , expressed his deep concern following the US-Israeli strikes targeting Iranian territory. The pan-African organization believes this new level of violence directly threatens global stability.

An urgent call for de-escalation

In an official statement, the AU chief urged all parties to de-escalate the situation immediately. His priorities are clear:

Return to international law: It is imperative to act within the framework of the Charter of the United Nations.
Maximum restraint: Stop the cycle of reprisals to avoid a regional conflagration.
Priority of dialogue: Support ongoing mediation efforts, particularly those led by the Sultanate of Oman .

Africa on the front line of collateral damage

The diplomat particularly emphasized the systemic risks of a protracted conflict. Beyond the Middle East, open warfare would have a significant impact on:

Energy: Volatility of oil barrel prices.
Food: A threat to global food security.
The African economy: Weakening of countries already under security and financial pressure.

"Only diplomacy, not force, can lead to lasting peace," concluded Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, recalling that the stability of the international order depends on respect for common rules.
