Transport Public Gratuit : La SOTRACO Soutient les Orphelins de Guerre au Burkina Faso
In a strong gesture of national solidarity, Burkina Faso has officially made public transport services (SOTRACO) completely free for all war orphans , also known as Wards of the Nation .
Announced in a press release dated Thursday, November 20, 2025 by the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, this historic measure aims to ease the burden on families and guarantee the social inclusion of children whose parents died serving their country or were victims of acts of terrorism.
This decision is not simply a one-off assistance, but a right enshrined in national legislation . It is based on Law No. 003-2022/ALT of June 22, 2022, concerning the status of Ward of the Nation.
This 2022 law already provides for comprehensive support, including educational support, health assistance, and free access to various social services, now fully extended to public transport.
To ensure rigorous application of the measure, the Ministry sent a firm note to SOTRACO agents.
Engine drivers, controllers and line managers are required to systematically facilitate free access for the Pupils, demonstrating availability, hospitality and cooperation.
The government insists on strict adherence to this directive in all the cities served. This operational vigilance is essential to ensure that access to the service is unimpeded and free from misunderstanding for these young beneficiaries.
For many observers, the introduction of this free transport is a powerful symbol of Burkina Faso's willingness to reaffirm its solidarity and to make the protection of children affected by the security crisis a national priority .
In a difficult context marked by loss of life, this measure provides concrete moral and material support to bereaved families, offering them ongoing assistance and helping to reduce inequalities. The country thus demonstrates its continued unity and commitment to those who bear the scars of these tragic events.
