Université de Maroua : Tempête autour des admissions en Doctorat
The selection of new doctoral students at the University of Maroua has brought tensions to a head. Between the institution's rigorous defense and accusations of favoritism leveled by civil society, the debate on academic transparency has been reignited.
In response to criticism, the university's Rector issued a categorical statement on February 20, 2026. According to the administration, there is no problem:
This technical interpretation is far from convincing Baba Bikkoy (aka Mota). In a scathing response, he denounces what he calls a "bureaucratic evasion".
At the heart of his argument lies the "Salamana" case, which he presents as blatant proof of a system of favoritism. According to him, the mere presence of certain names on the lists, even before thorough screening, undermines the institution's credibility. For Bikkoy, hiding behind administrative semantics amounts to ignoring a fundamental problem: the sacrifice of merit on the altar of opacity.
| Institutional Perspective | Critique of Civil Society |
| Step-by-step process (technical then scientific). | Suspicion of favoritism from the moment of registration. |
| Presumption of conformity to the texts. | A requirement for integrity and visible results. |
| Defending the integrity of the university. | Warning about the devaluation of the doctorate. |
The issue at stake: Beyond this verbal sparring, it's the symbolic value of the PhD in Maroua
which is being scrutinized. The challenge for the university will be to prove, through its actions, that academic excellence remains the only true criterion for admission.
