Côte d’Ivoire : la population franchit la barre des 32 millions d’habitants
Ivory Coast continues to grow at a steady pace. According to recent estimates, the country will now have nearly 32 million inhabitants by 2025. This is impressive growth for this West African nation, whose demographic vitality continues to attract the attention of observers.
Figures vary slightly depending on the source. The World Bank estimates the population at around 31.9 million in 2024, while Worldometer puts the figure at 32.7 million for 2025. In any case, the trend is clear: the Ivorian population continues to grow, driven by a growth rate of around 2.4% per year.
Since the last general census in 2021, growth has been spectacular. The country's population has grown from 29.4 million to over 32 million in just four years. This demographic leap can be explained by a still-strong birth rate, improved living conditions, and increasingly pronounced urbanization.
Côte d'Ivoire is a young country today, very young indeed. The median age of the population is around 19, a figure that illustrates the vitality and human potential of the country. This youth represents a tremendous economic opportunity, provided it is supported by appropriate policies in education, training, and employment.
But this demographic dynamic also raises major challenges. Large cities, particularly Abidjan, are seeing their populations explode. The need for housing, infrastructure, transportation, and basic services is multiplying. The government is being called upon to rethink urban planning and strengthen public policies to respond to this growing pressure.
Environmentally, population growth is also putting a strain on natural resources. Deforestation, waste management, and access to drinking water are all issues that are becoming increasingly pressing.
For experts, this rapid growth is not inevitable, but rather an opportunity to be seized. "Ivorian youth are a source of wealth. If they are well trained and well supported, they can become the driving force of sustainable development," several local economists emphasize.
Demographic projections suggest that Côte d'Ivoire could exceed 33 million inhabitants by 2026 , if the trend continues. It remains for the country to transform this human energy into a lever for prosperity.
