La Côte d’Ivoire et le Guyana scellent leur union à New York

A new era is dawning for Ivorian diplomacy in South America. On Thursday, April 23, 2026 , Côte d'Ivoire and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana officially established diplomatic relations. The signing of this joint communiqué took place at the United Nations headquarters in New York, marking a decisive turning point in South-South cooperation.

A formal act to strengthen a friendship

The document was initialed by two key figures in UN diplomacy:

  1. Ms. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett , Permanent Representative of Guyana.
  2. Mr. Tiémoko Moriko , Permanent Representative of Côte d'Ivoire.

For the Guyanese ambassador, this rapprochement is described as "historic". She sees it as a major opportunity to strengthen ties of friendship and lay the foundations for an ambitious multi-sectoral collaboration.

Economic diversification and synergies

On the Ivorian side, Ambassador Tiémoko Moriko reiterated that this alliance is part of the partnership diversification strategy initiated by President Alassane Ouattara. He specifically highlighted the strengths of the "Ivorian model":

  1. Agricultural leadership: World's leading cocoa producer and a major player in the cashew nut market.
  2. Promising sectors: Dynamism in digital technology, energy, mining and agribusiness.
  3. Business climate: Structural reforms aimed at attracting international investment.
"The similarities between our two economies, particularly in the agricultural and extractive sectors, constitute a solid foundation for our future trade," the Ivorian diplomat stressed.

Guyana: A partner on the rise

Located on the northern coast of South America, Guyana is no longer just a country with an agricultural and mining tradition. Thanks to the exploitation of its vast offshore oil fields , it now stands out as one of the most dynamic economies in the world.

This rapprochement comes at a symbolic moment for the Caribbean country, which is preparing to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its independence next May.
