It's a symbolic return to its roots. On February 9, 2026 , Abidjan launched the 50th General Assembly of the Federation of African National Law Insurance Companies (FANAF) . Founded in 1976 in Yamoussoukro, the organization is celebrating its 50th anniversary under the ambitious theme: "FANAF's 50th Anniversary: Building the Future of African Insurance."

A gathering of international scope

The event confirms Abidjan's status as a regional financial hub. The figures demonstrate the importance of this gathering:

1. 1,700 participants (executives, experts, financiers and regulators).
2. 210 insurance and reinsurance companies represented.
3. 60 exhibition stands and 3 days of intensive conferences.

The challenges of maturity: Digitalization and Inclusion

Representing the Ivorian Prime Minister, the Minister of Economy, Adama Coulibaly , urged the sector to become a true engine of growth. For him, the future of African insurance rests on four pillars:

1. The digitalization of services.
2. Adapting to climate risks , which have become critical.
3. The transformation of financial markets .
4. Inclusion , through products accessible to local populations.

For his part, César Ekomié Afene , president of Fanaf, praised the dynamism of the Ivorian market, which he describes as a "frontier market with strong growth", while inviting his peers to learn from the past to better anticipate the challenges of tomorrow.

The observation of an untapped potential

The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah , however, highlighted the reality on the ground: the insurance penetration rate in Africa is stagnating at around 3% . This structural lag creates major security gaps, particularly in vital sectors such as:

1. Agriculture and transport.
2. Consumer credit.
3. Industrial development.

A political turning point: Beyond the celebrations, this 50th edition is marked by a major governance issue: the election of a new president for the Federation. The future leader will have to intensify dialogue with regulators and harmonize markets to successfully manage the sector's technological transformation.
