Côte d’Ivoire : L'horreur au Lycée moderne 1 d’Akoupé, les cours suspendus après une intrusion armée

The morning of Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at the Lycée Moderne 1 in Akoupé descended into chaos. At around 10:45 a.m., shots rang out inside the school, forcing the immediate suspension of classes and causing widespread panic.

The assault was carried out by a group of about five or six young men, some armed with shotguns, others with slingshots, clubs, and stones. The intruders entered through the eastern facade, an unsecured area overlooking scrubland and a lowland where the Première and Terminale classes are located.

Shots fired into the air initially caused terror, while the rest of the group simultaneously threatened students and staff in other classrooms with their makeshift weapons.

The atmosphere quickly turned hysterical: students and teachers rushed out of the classrooms, caught up in the screams, tears, and confusion. The attackers then fled into the bushes before the security forces arrived.

A science teacher, still in shock, recounted the scene: "I was in the 8th grade when I heard the explosions. Before I could even understand, a young man armed with a club and a rock ordered us to leave. His excitement caused panic among the students, who felt threatened and in danger."

Law enforcement officers quickly intervened to conduct a sweep of the area. This incident marks the third school disruption since the start of the election campaign, again by unidentified individuals. These repeated actions highlight serious flaws in school security.

In the face of these recurring threats, urgent appeals are being made to the authorities. It is deemed imperative to strengthen security at the school, particularly by erecting a fence, in order to guarantee the right to education in a peaceful environment and to protect the school community.
