Protection de la biodiversité : Le Ministre Abou Bamba appelle l'OIPR à un « engagement sans faille »

During a visit to the offices of the Ivorian Office of Parks and Reserves (OIPR) on Monday, May 4, 2026, the Minister of the Environment and Ecological Transition, Abou Bamba , set new goals for the preservation of Ivory Coast's natural heritage. While acknowledging past successes and highlighting the financial challenges ahead, the focus is on excellence and sustainable development.

International recognition for the OIPR

The Minister commended the rigorous work carried out by the Director General, General Adama Tondossama , and his teams. Thanks to their professionalism, the OIPR has now risen to become one of the best conservation agencies in West Africa.

This success is illustrated by a major distinction: the awarding of the IUCN "Green List" label to three emblematic sites:

  1. Taï National Park;
  2. Comoe National Park;
  3. The N'Zo Wildlife Reserve.
"This label is a sign of management that complies with the most demanding international standards," the Minister recalled, emphasizing the importance of these areas for the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Focus on the blue economy and sustainable tourism

The future of conservation in Côte d'Ivoire now depends on economic development. Abou Bamba urged the OIPR to apply the same performance standards to the Grand-Béréby Marine Protected Area (MPA) , as well as to future marine areas, in order to boost the country's blue economy.

The ministry's promises:

  1. Tourism development: Site development and creation of quality infrastructure to make parks popular destinations.
  2. Logistical support: Official handover of motorcycles to strengthen the security of protected areas on the ground.
  3. Funding: Firm commitment to bridge the financial gap of the new strategy ( PCGAP, 2nd generation ).

Concrete results and persistent challenges

General Adama Tondossama took advantage of this platform to present a positive assessment of the Office, created in 2002. The OIPR now manages a network of 19 protected areas (compared to 14 originally), covering more than 2.5 million hectares.

Key figures and outlook for 2026:

  1. Budget: Approximately 20 billion FCFA raised from partners.
  2. Priority: Finalize the equipment for the future headquarters of the OIPR.
  3. Urgent: Ensure long-term financial viability through the Management Framework Programme.

The Minister concluded his visit by reiterating his desire to raise awareness among decision-makers and the public: nature conservation is not a luxury, but the driving force behind harmonious economic and social development for all Ivorians.
