Meeting in Abidjan from May 11 to 13, 2026, members of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Childhood AIDS outlined an ambitious roadmap. The objective is clear: to eradicate HIV transmission in children by 2030. To achieve this, experts advocate a strategic shift based on political will and operational innovation.

1. A political impetus at the top

The success of this fight depends on a commitment at the highest level of government. The recommendations include:

  1. The involvement of First Ladies: A dedicated regional meeting will be organised before the end of 2026.
  2. A ministerial statement: A high-level meeting will need to seal concrete commitments for the pivotal period 2027-2030 .

2. Accountability and rigorous monitoring

To turn promises into results, participants propose the creation of a multi-stakeholder regional committee . Its mission will be to:

  1. To regularly assess the performance of each country.
  2. To ensure rigorous technical monitoring of the commitments made.

3. Towards a "Special Catch-Up Year" in 2027

Accelerating screening and treatment is the top priority. The year 2027 has been designated as a pivotal year for:

  1. Intensify screening campaigns among pregnant women, children and young people.
  2. Integrating services: Promoting "all-in-one" consultations where screening, treatment and prenatal care are grouped together to simplify the healthcare journey.
  3. Strengthening community: Abandoning isolated care models in favor of integrated health systems, supported by increased investment in local structures.
"All our efforts must converge towards this objective." — Minister of Health of Ivory Coast , at the closing of the proceedings.

The urgency to act: The countdown has begun

Winnie Byanyima, the UNAIDS Executive Director, emphasized via videoconference that while the scientific tools exist, time is running out. With only four years until the 2030 deadline, she urged states to increase their domestic funding to ensure an AIDS-free generation.

Côte d'Ivoire, praised for its leadership, has pledged to maintain this pressure so that the elimination of pediatric HIV becomes a concrete reality before the end of the decade.
