RDC : au moins 32 morts dans l’effondrement d’une mine de cobalt
A deadly tragedy struck the Lualaba province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. On Saturday, November 15, 2025, an improvised bridge collapsed at the Kalando mining site, killing at least 32 artisanal miners .
According to initial reports, a stampede broke out after shots were fired, reportedly by soldiers, triggering widespread panic. The makeshift bridge collapsed under the pressure of the crowd, plunging dozens of people into a flooded trench. The victims were found piled on top of one another.
The Kalando site, officially operated by an industrial company, is nevertheless frequented by thousands of artisanal miners who work there in extremely precarious conditions. Local authorities estimate that more than 10,000 people work there regularly, despite the significant risks and recurring bans.
This tragedy once again highlights the dangers of artisanal cobalt mining in the DRC, a country that supplies more than 70% of the world's production of this metal essential for the manufacture of batteries for phones, computers and electric vehicles.
Given the gravity of the situation, provincial authorities have suspended activities at the site and announced the opening of an investigation. Several local organizations are calling for a full investigation into the exact circumstances of this tragedy and the role of the security forces.
