Région du Hambol : 33 personnes interpellées lors d’une vaste opération contre l’orpaillage illégal
Security forces have dealt a severe blow to illegal gold mining in the Hambol Region . On Wednesday, January 21, 2026 , a joint operation conducted by the Mobile Gendarmerie Squadron of Niakara and the Territorial Gendarmerie Brigade of Katiola resulted in the arrest of 33 individuals involved in illegal gold mining.
The operation took place at an illegal gold mining site that had been reoccupied in Kanangonon , a locality in the sub-prefecture of Fronan . On site, the gendarmes caught the operators in the act , putting an end to their illegal activities and proceeding to clear the site.
During the operation, law enforcement also destroyed seven motorcycles and several makeshift shelters used as camps by the gold miners. A significant amount of equipment was seized, including a motorcycle , a generator , a jackhammer , 24 cannabis pellets , 24 cell phones , and medications used for drug abuse .
This action is part of the intensified fight against illegal gold mining , a scourge with serious environmental, economic, and security consequences. The authorities intend to maintain pressure in order to permanently dismantle these networks and preserve natural resources, while protecting local communities.
The individuals arrested have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further legal proceedings, while surveillance operations continue in the region.
