The tragedy in Koumassi Soweto has once again highlighted serious shortcomings in the Ivorian construction sector. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Living Environment, the construction site of the building that collapsed on Saturday, May 23, 2026, was operating in complete illegality, without any building permits.

The five-story building, which was still being finished, collapsed around 6 a.m. following heavy rainfall.

A heavy human toll and major technical failures

The rescue operations, led by the Military Firefighters Group (GSPM), quickly revealed the scale of the tragedy:

  1. Preliminary report: 8 lifeless bodies have been recovered from the rubble after 24 hours of intensive searching.
  2. Causes of the collapse: Initial technical analyses point to critical flaws in the sizing of the loads that the building was supposed to bear.
  3. The trigger: The building collapsed just after concrete pouring work on the 5th floor, an overload aggravated by torrential rains that fell on the area.
Emergency measures: As a safety precaution, a neighboring building, severely weakened by the impact, was immediately evacuated. Authorities secured the site and ordered the demolition of the remaining structure. Administrative and legal proceedings are now underway to determine responsibility.

The anger and incomprehension of the population

This tragedy raises a crucial question that is troubling Ivorian public opinion:

How could a five-story building (ground floor + 5 floors) have been erected and already partially occupied without any prior checks being carried out?

The ministry has formally reiterated that all construction is subject to strict prior authorization, under penalty of administrative and criminal sanctions. However, the reality on the ground contradicts the effectiveness of these controls.

The recurring scourge of uncontrolled construction

Current situation Consequences during the rainy season
Proliferation of irregular and unauthorized construction sites. Increased number of collapses of weakened buildings.
Flagrant disregard for technical construction standards. Tragic loss of life and considerable material damage.

This latest collapse reignites the urgent debate on real estate regulation in Côte d'Ivoire. With the rainy season just beginning, the people's cry is unanimous: faced with these avoidable tragedies, "enough is enough." Ivorians now expect decisive action and exemplary sanctions.
