Beijing has taken a historic step in its economic relations with the continent. President Xi Jinping announced the complete elimination of tariffs for almost all African countries, effective May 1st.

A generalization of the "zero tax"

Until now, this preferential treatment only benefited 33 African nations. In May, this policy will be extended to all 53 of China's diplomatic partners on the continent.

The notable exception: Only Eswatini remains excluded from this measure, due to its continued diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

The challenges of a strategic shift

This decision is part of a reconfiguration of global trade:

Trade hegemony: Already Africa's leading trading partner, China is strengthening its influence against a more protectionist United States since the tariff increases imposed last year.
Massive investments: Besides trade, Beijing remains the main financier of major infrastructure on the continent.
Development: According to Xi Jinping, this tax exemption will offer "new prospects" for growth for African economies.
