Coupe du monde 2026 : Le calvaire administratif des supporters africains pour l'accès aux États-Unis

Attending the 2026 World Cup is shaping up to be a real ordeal for African football fans. Between rampant inflation and drastic bureaucratic barriers, supporters from more than half of the continent's qualified countries will have to overcome significant financial and administrative obstacles imposed by Washington.

An exorbitant financial deposit is required to obtain the visa.

To obtain the precious key, nationals of many African countries (including Ivory Coast, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria or Cape Verde) face a major financial constraint: the Visa Bond Program .

Implemented in the summer of 2025 by the Trump administration and expanded to a total of 50 countries, this system requires the payment of a bank guarantee coupled with an obligation to leave the territory by a strict date:

  1. €4,350 for a child.
  2. Up to €13,000 for an adult.

The stated objective of the US Department of Homeland Security is to curb illegal immigration and overstays, pointing to 2024 statistics where several African nations showed significant visa overstay rates (13.5% for Cape Verde, 8.5% for Ivory Coast, or 6.5% for Algeria).

A special privilege for the players, but a dead end for the fans

Double standards: While the fans suffer, the official delegations breathe a sigh of relief. Following negotiations by FIFA, the US State Department granted a full waiver of bail for the players and their technical staff.

For football fans, however, the situation is critical. Beyond the exorbitant cost of travel (plane tickets, accommodation, matches), the deposit represents an insurmountable barrier for many. Yacine Idriss Diallo, president of the Ivorian Football Federation, deplores a measure that "makes things more complicated" for supporters already struggling with inflation.

Even stricter restrictions for Senegal and Ivory Coast

Certainly, the White House has tried to loosen the reins by integrating the Fifa Pass system, an accelerated system for applicants already holding valid match tickets (used by approximately 14,000 people).

But for Senegal and Ivory Coast, hope is virtually nonexistent. Placed on a list of countries with partial entry restrictions to the United States since the end of 2025, supporters of these two nations who did not already possess a visa before December 2025 will simply be denied entry. The American dream ends before the tournament even kicks off.
