The airline industry is bearing the brunt of the economic repercussions of geopolitical tensions in Iran. To offset soaring fuel costs, the Air France-KLM group has officially announced a fare increase on its long-haul network.

The key figure: According to IATA, fuel now represents more than a quarter of airlines' total operating costs.
Not all companies are in the same boat. Those that anticipated the crisis through fixed-price fuel purchase contracts (hedging) are limiting the damage. Air France-KLM thus benefits from relative protection, having secured 70% of its fuel needs for the next six months.
