Drame en Bolivie : Un avion militaire s’écrase avec une cargaison de billets
A tragic accident occurred on Friday near El Alto International Airport, close to La Paz. A Bolivian Air Force C-130 Hercules , carrying funds from the Central Bank, came to rest on an avenue after a spectacular runway excursion.
The death toll, still provisional, has risen throughout the day. According to Colonel Pavel Tovar:
The aircraft was arriving from Santa Cruz. Initial reports indicate that poor weather conditions may have caused the crash during landing. Images broadcast by local media show a severely damaged aircraft wreckage and crushed cars on a nearby road.
The accident resulted in scenes of extreme tension. As the cargo of banknotes was scattered at the crash site, locals attempted to seize it.
Forceful intervention: Law enforcement had to use tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd and secure the perimeter around the debris and funds of the Central Bank.
The Ministry of Defense confirmed the incident, while emergency services (firefighters and police units) remain mobilized at the scene. As a direct consequence of the crash, El Alto airport was forced to temporarily suspend operations , according to Boliviana de Aviación.
