États-Unis: Dick Cheney, l'ex-vice-président de George W. Bush, est mort à l'âge de 84 ans

Former Vice President Dick Cheney died at the age of 84, his family announced to US media on Tuesday, November 4. The Republican served as George W. Bush's vice president from 2001 to 2009 and was the principal architect of the war on terror, pushing Washington to invade Iraq.

A man of the shadows, renowned for his considerable influence behind the scenes, the former number two of George W. Bush (2001-2009) had forged such a reputation that he was considered one of the most powerful vice presidents in American history.

A key architect of the war on terror waged during George W. Bush's presidency, he pushed Washington to invade Iraq, which led to the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. This was done under the pretext that the regime in Baghdad possessed weapons of mass destruction, information that was later proven false.

Many specialists point to this invasion as the main consequence of the destabilization of the Iraqi state, which, ten years later, facilitated the emergence of the terrorist organization Islamic State.
