Macabre découverte à Trinité-et-Tobago : 56 corps exhumés d'un cimetière

Shockwaves have rippled through Trinidad and Tobago following the discovery last Saturday of the remains of 56 individuals in the Cumuto cemetery. Among the victims are 50 infants and six adults (four men and two women).

An investigation for "illegal disposal"

Local police immediately described the situation as "deeply concerning." Initial findings suggest authorities suspect the illegal handling of unclaimed bodies .

  1. Ongoing investigation: Forensic technicians are conducting thorough medical-legal examinations to identify the origin of these bodies.
  2. Call for accountability: In a firm statement, the police promised that any institution or individual who failed in their legal obligations would be prosecuted.
  3. Appeal for witnesses: The authorities are seeking the public's help to shed light on this case which is shaking the national community.

An archipelago under high tension

This event takes place within a particularly difficult social and security climate for the small Caribbean state.

"We understand the emotional impact such a discovery will have on families," police said, noting the current fragility of social cohesion.

The country faces major challenges:

  1. Permanent state of emergency: The country is living under a state of emergency decreed in July 2025. This is the fourth time since 2021 that such measures have been put in place to counter the rampant violence.
  2. Record crime: Despite a slight decrease in criminal activity, Trinidad and Tobago remains a hub for drug trafficking.
  3. Global ranking: With a homicide rate of 37 per 100,000 inhabitants , the archipelago was ranked, according to 2025 data, as the sixth most dangerous nation in the world.

As the investigation continues, this case of "unclaimed corpses" raises serious questions about respect for mortuary procedures and the management of public services in a country already plagued by insecurity.
