USA/Drame en Louisiane : Huit enfants abattus lors d’une tuerie familiale
The city of Shreveport, in northern Louisiana, is reeling after a weekend of violence. A man opened fire on his family, killing eight children between the ages of 1 and 14. This is the deadliest mass shooting in the United States so far in 2024.
Alerted early Sunday morning, law enforcement discovered the horror at three separate crime scenes. The toll is heavy:
The suspected perpetrator, identified as Shamar Elkins , fled in a stolen vehicle before being pursued by police. The chase ended tragically for him. While state police have confirmed his death, some uncertainty remains: it is still unclear whether he was shot by officers or took his own life.
Shooter profile: Shamar Elkins was known to police for a 2019 conviction related to weapons possession. Surprisingly, no history of domestic violence had been reported against him prior to this incident.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said he was "heartbroken," while Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House and local elected official, condemned a "senseless tragedy."
This tragedy brings back into focus the scourge of firearms in the United States:
The country continues to have the highest gun fatality rate among developed nations, with the number of guns in circulation now exceeding the number of inhabitants.
